Default "Comment" references are superscript - not a good thing [WORD 2000

Can't figure out how to get the "Comment" references to be on line with the
text to which the comments refer. They appear to be superscript, but
highlighting them and "un-super-ing" these has no effect at all. Highlighting
the entire document and un-super-ing it, too, has absolutely no effect. So
the problem must be in the "comment reference style"; I've tried to change
the formatting via the Style menu, but superscript/online does not seem to be
a choice offered.

This is not a desirable thing.

Has anyone repaired this problem out there?

Check the formatting of the Comment Reference character style:

In the Modify Style dialog box, click Modify | Format | Font.

Click the Font tab. Click to clear the "Superscript" attribute. (If
the option is greyed out and checked, you may have to click twice; the
first click enables the option, the second one clears it.)

Also click the Character Spacing tab and make sure that "Position" is
set to "Normal" (not to "Raised").

Click OK to confirm the settings in the dialog boxes.

Note: To display the Modify Style dialog box, use Format | Style,
locate the correct style, and then click the Modify button.
