Default Ghost files

When I open a word doc from my desktop I get this ghost file (~$dex of deposition...- abc.doc) and when I close the original file it goes away. Can someone give a good explanation of what that is? Why it's there? What type of file is it?

That is how Word works. Whatever sub-directory the original file is in a
temporary copy is created. Editing changes are made to the copy, then
the original is deleted and the temporary copy is named as the original.

PS. This is precisely the reason that you should never work directly on
removable media
