Ghost files
When I open a word doc from my desktop I get this ghost file (~$dex of deposition...- abc.doc) and when I close the original file it goes away. Can someone give a good explanation of what that is? Why it's there? What type of file is it?

Ghost files
That is how Word works. Whatever sub-directory the original file is in a
temporary copy is created. Editing changes are made to the copy, then the original is deleted and the temporary copy is named as the original. PS.
