Default MSIMN

MSIMN Is Still Running After I Quit Outlook Express and I can't open Outlook
Express again unless I open Task Manager and end the MSIMN process.
I'm using Norton Internet Security NOT McAfee. I've tried disableing email
virus scanning and it doesn't seem to help. I'm running Windows XP SP2. Can
anyone help?

Are you getting any notification about compacting of your message store? If
so, do you allow it to complete? Try manually compacting your message store
by using Outlook Express menu, File/Folder/Compact all folders and let it
run to completion without doing anything else. See if that fixes your
problems. It usually helps also if you click File/Work Offline first so
that the compacting will not be interrupted by a poll for incoming mail
messages which will cause an error in compacting.

I'm not getting any notifications. I've also tried compacting all folders and
that doesn't seem to help.

What is the version number of Outlook Express as shown in the Help/About
screen for the program? Do you have any other program running in the
background that could be making a call to the mail program? Do you have a
fax program installed? Is Outlook (in MS Office) also installed?

Do you have your antivirus program set to scan incoming/and or outgoing
mail? Try shutting down the antivirus program completely and see if that
fixes the problem even though you say removing email scanning has not
helped.

Last, when you updated to SP2, was an antivirus program running in the
background? If so, your install may be corrupted.

I checked other programs running in the background and found out my Earthlink
spam blocker wasn't working well with Norton Antivirus 2005. I uninstalled
spam blocker and everything seems to be working. Thanks for the help Jim and
Steve.

Thanks for the feedback. SPAM programs are now running neck and neck with
antivirus programs and email scanning as the major causes of most problems
with Outlook Express. Glad you found the problem and fixed it.
