Default master doc/styles/headings/TOC

I'm creating a master document with many sub documents.
Sub documents are sent to me from all over with different formatting.
I'm going into each document and formatting the text I want to show up on
the TOC.
Q1)How can I apply the heading style to just a part of the text on the line.
It seems to only let me apply to the how line, not part of the line. example
Line 1 "This is my title 1.2"
When I try to apply the style to just 1.2 , it doesn't work.
Q2)I want my TOC to show
Heading1
Heading2
Where heading 2 is indented, but it doesn't work that way. It seems to line
them up one right after the other.
