[Mail merge] Pb with a datasource from a remote server

Hi all,

My datasource comes from a SQL Server DataBase.

If the DB is on my pc, no pb to get the data

If the DB is on a remote server, I contact the server using it's IP address,
using the Data Connection Wizard.
If I use the query with Excel, i can get the data.
But Word says: Word was not able to open the DataSource

Any help woul be greatly appreciated.

Which version of Word are you using?

Are you using OLEDB or ODBC to connect?

Are you using WIndows Integrated Security or SQL Server security? If you are
using the latter, you have to specify the username and password and ensure
that they are saved in the .odc file that is created when you use OLEDB to
connect. (And note that that makes them visible in a text file)

Thank's for your answer, Peter.

I'm using Word2002.(A French and an English version)
The server is located in a Hosting Company.
I have to use the username and pwd they gave me.

With th econnection wizzard, I select the db, then I check the connection
with the server and it's ok
I can then select which table I need.

I validate and word tells me it can't open the source.

If I do the same with Excel, no problem, I can query which ever table I
want.

A bug in Word?

If you get to a point in the connection dialogue with title

"Save Data Connection File and Finish"

make sure you check "Save Password in File"

If I do the same with Excel, no problem, I can query which ever table I
want.

A bug in Word?

If anything, a design problem I think. In fact, as far as I know, Excel
still uses ODBC to connect to SQL Server databases, in Word XP now uses
OLEDB by default. You can use ODBC in Word by using Tools|MS Query when you
reach the Select Data Source dialog box. However, Word still tends to lose
the password - everything appears to assume that you are using Windows
Authentication.
