Default Cannot connect to Exchange server

I get the following error message when i try to setup outlook with an
exchange server account;

"The action could not be completed. The connection to the Microsoft Exchange
Server is unavailable. Outlook must be online or connected to complete this
action."

I run Outlook 2003 on a W2k SP4 laptop. The server is Exchange 2003 server.
So far this error occured only on this single installation.
How di I work around or solve the problem?
I have tested the following: -

1) uninstalling / reinstalling outlook
2) disabling & removing any firewall software
3) deleting & recreating a new outlook profile
4) i can ping the servers ip address, resolve dns, surf the web, etc
5) i have been able to connect to the mailbox using a different computer

Read the question, didn't sign up for the solution. Maybe someone here has
any idea? Been through about a hundred posts on several forums, many similar
problems, almost no qualified solutions.

Hi,
I'm having a similar problem to you - however my connection was fine until
about the 20th ... since then I cannot connect to the the exchange server,
cannot establish a remote desktop session and cannot browse directories on
the server (2003). On the same machine I can get a remote desktop session to
other (win 2k) machines but not to 2003. And using a different machine, I can
browse directories and get a remote desktop established to the 2003 server.
It seems therefore that the XP Pro machine I am using has a problem with 2003
- although this was never the case prior to about the 20th. I am beginning to
suspect a windows update is the culprit - anyone want to own up?

Paul

Have not signed up to read the answere. Starting Outlook with the /rpcdiag
switch returns an empty connection status window. Have checked registry for
the values described in http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=830914
All the values are present and correct.
Any further suggestions, anyone?

Yes, made a new profile also..
but no repsons..
It seams like its trying to connect at first when you use "check name"
it takes a couple off seconds then it says "bla bla."
but after that it respond at once with the "cant connect to exchange server
bla bla".

so it seams like it isnt trying to connect at all after it first failed...

ping is under 20 ms to the exchange server..

Default Cannot connect to Exchange server

Check registry entrys for the rpc protocol:
This behavior may occur when any of the following registry values are
missing in the Microsoft Windows Registry.

Value Name Value Data
ncacn_np Rpcrt4.dll
ncacn_ip_tcp Rpcrt4.dll
ncadg_ip_udp Rpcrt4.dll
ncacn_http Rpcrt4.dll

RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, follow these steps:
1. Quit all Microsoft Windows programs.
2. Click Start, and then click Run.
3. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
4. Expand the Registry to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Rpc\ClientPr otocols
5. If any of the Registry values that are listed in the "Cause" section of
this article are missing from the ClientProtocols key, follow these steps: a.
Right-click ClientProtocols, point to New, and then click String Value.
b. Type the Value Name of the entry that is missing, and then press ENTER.
c. Right-click the Value Name that you typed in step b, and then click
Modify.
d. Type the appropriate Value Data for the Value Name that you typed in
step b, and then click OK.

6. Repeat step 5 for each missing value in the ClientProtocols key.

Note Microsoft Outlook cannot connect to a Microsoft Exchange server if the
registry entries that were previously mentioned are missing in the Windows
Registry.

To see if the client really tries to contact server, start Outlook with the
switch /rpcdiag at the end of the command line. A rpc connection status
window appears. If no entries occures, rpc is not activated.
