If that is the sort of grace you exhibit when someone wastes his own time
and effort to attempt to assist you - and then points you in the right
direction, perhaps you could tell us why we should bother to respond to your
questions in the future?

This is a user peer group not a Microsoft help desk. We don't know
everything, but we do our best to assist. Microsoft didn't 'drop you like a
hot potato' it never picked you up in the first place. No-one from Microsoft
(officially) responds here. If you want Microsoft's help I am sure that they
will be happy to take your money.

It seems you've found your answer, but my suggestion would have been to
check the width of the table. It's usually helpful to insert the table after
creating the snaking columns, since any new table is inserted at 100% of the
column width. For an existing table, you can make sure that auto resizing is
disabled, then set the table width to 100% (to ensure that it is all
visible) as a starting point for adjusting the column widths.

Thanks. This was quite a bit more helpful. You mention anomalies, which I
can
grasp, like the sunspots we used to blame for glitches a long time ago.
Definitely the table contains fixed width cells, but I do not understand
what
difference this would make, as it has not made a difference in the past
for
other tables I have 'snake-columnized'.

Incidentally, I also tried converting the table to text before
'snake-columnizing' it, but this then lost or hid parts of the table for
me
and still did not 'snake-columnize' it.

I have no idea why, and Microsoft probably won't either - though I don't
speak for them. I have created a three column table twelve pages long and
it
works as I describe. However it is not *your* table, so I cannot comment
on
what anomalies it may contain - maybe fixed width cells?

(I do not know why it is so difficult to explain what I need. I am
well aware of the columns tab within the page layout tab. I have used
it before to snake tables. I have described the table I am trying to
snake now. The column cmd within the page layout does not work for
the table I described in the previous post. I want to know why.
Microsoft should publish details about the various cmds to illustrate
in detail when they work and when do not).

Format - in Word versions up to 2003 is on the main menu bar.
In Word 2007, columns are on the Page Layout tab

1. where is 'format'?

2. I have been able to snake tables in the past without being unable
to read the content. Each row has a 3 columns: first column of 2
characters, second column has 1 character, and the third column has
11 characters. Should be able to snake this into at least 3 'snakes'
per page.

Thanks.

"Graham Mayor" wrote:

Put the cursor in the first cell then format columns two
columns. The table should shrink and reflow into two columns. You
may no longer be able to read the content.

Did not make things clearer.

I want to know how to 'snake' a multi-page table into columns on
fewer numbers of pages.

I think you're confusing two features: tables, and
[snaking/newspaper] columns. See if this makes things clearer:

I have a 3 column table 12 pages long; I want to show more
entries of the table on a page, but the 'column' cmd will not
work.

Incidentally, the word 'column' is used 2 ways in the
application: a) 'column's in a table
b) 'column's per page

I want the table to appear in more than 1 column on the 'page'.

Thanks.

Just an FYI. There are a lot of us who give thanks for the MVPs every day,
and wonder where in the heck we'd be without you.
