how do I create a list of figures?

Hai,

Thank you for your assistance with my question in advance!

I am writing my thesis. It is usually done in a master document format and
as I am a novice with all these applications, I took the easy way out and
took the tempate or rather the document of one my seniors and deleted her
stuff and added mine! This worked fantastically so far. But my problem now is
that her figures started from chapter eight which i did not have and so have
deleted. Now if I add a figure in chapter two, it does not show up in the
list of figures and even if i updatethe field it gives me a message "Error!
No table of figures entries found."
how do i create my list of figures???
i know this is a mess....... please accept my apologies in advance!
