I still use venerable but excellent pre-MS Visio Technical 4.1 together with
Visio Prof 2000, because of the loss of functionality and the agricultural
graphics filters. I wasted money on Visio 2002 and uninstalled it after a
week in disgust and reinstalled V2000. It was the last version of Visio
I'll buy.

The simple reality is that Microsoft has lost the plot. I'm starting to
wish that MS goes the same way as PanAm.

Anywhere I can get a features list for Visio Technical 4.1?

I may be sending back my newly purchased Visio Pro 2003 and it sounds
as if there are database and modelling features I would prefer in
these older versions. (I finally gave up on my Visio 1.0 because no
one else seemed to be able to open the drawings.) I do like Pro 2003
much, much better, but never looked at anything in between.

Thanks
Bill

Perhaps you're being sarcastic, but all versions of Visio should be able to
open Visio 1.0 drawings.

In terms of "features", pre-MS Visio Technical 4.1 is pretty much similar to
later versions, except for the Technical influence in its
templates/stencils. All of those templates/stencils work quite happily with
later versions.

It is in certain functions that Technical 4.1 performs better than the later
versions. Its graphics filters (Save As...) are much better. Its handling
of complex shapes is far better. Can't understand why MS retrograded and
degraded the software. Can't understand why MS dropped the technical
aspects, either.

Visio 2002 was a waste of money. It gathers dust in a corner. As for
2003 and later, I'll never know. I'll never buy Visio again. MS have
wrecked an excellent product. I'll stick with Visio Technical 4.1 and
2000.

I've already moved back to WordPerfect suite; I've already moved to Mozilla
Firefox; next step is away from Outlook Express. Then for Linux. A MS-free
world!! Smell the roses!!!

Ever since the release of Visio Professional, there was always the issue of
which one to buy, most users required both. Though it is true that Visio
Technical has been dropped, the content (or most of it) in Visio Technical
is now part of Visio Professional.

I must be missing something here... I have Visual Studio .NET Architect 2003
and I've been struggling to find an option to install the Visio portion.

Due to the fact that the data modelling was removed the tool was also
rendered useless for me ... without the data modelling Visio is very
comparable to a free tool such as DIA

I'm not sure how Visio was bundled into Visual Studio EA, but I thought it
was included on a separate CD from the rest of Visual Studio.

Is is on a seperate CD, labeled something like "Visio for Enterprise
Architects".

That data modeling functionality is part of VEA, with some limited
functionality in Visio Pro (no forward engineering, ORM, etc.).

Scot.
