Syke wrote: snip Thanks for that, but I find this puzzling. I use Windows Automatic Update and this is a copy of what I find when I check my system on the Windows Update Site. Windows XP Cumulative Security Update for Outlook Express for Windows XP (KB929123) 04 September 2008 Automatic Updates Windows XP Security Update for Windows XP with Windows Media Format Runtime 9 (KB941569) 04 September 2008 Automatic Updates Windows XP Security Update for Outlook Express for Windows XP (KB951066) 04 September 2008 Automatic Updates Windows Defender Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB915597 (Definition 1.41.1074.0) 04 September 2008 Automatic Updates Windows Windows Update Agent 7.2.6001.784 04 September 2008 Automatic Updates What Bruce said (and congrats for enabling Automatic Updates). You credit me with more guile than I could possibly be capable of! I've had Automatic Updates enabled since April 2007!! Then something's been screwy for a quite some time. KB923123 was released 12 June-*07* and KB941569 was released 11 Dec-*07*, yet it's just been installed. Furthermore, KB951066 is also installed (according to your headers): It was released on 12 Aug-08 and does not appear in your list. How is Automatic Updates configured now (e.g., Automatic; Download but Notify; Notify Only)? Did you recently change this setting? See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306525 -- ~PA Bear It's set to Notify Only. The only clue I can offer is that the system was new in about April 2006, and had to be re-formatted and a clean install done about a year ago. In an attempt to solve the original Font problem, I did a System Restore (back to 31 August) but because that didn't help, I undid the Restore. I'm certainly no expert, but I do regular Diskcheck, De-fragmenting, Reg Pro Supreme and CCleaner about once a week, along with weekly Virus checks (Steganos) and Spyware checks, (Spyware Doctor, Windows Defender, Spybot and Advanced Windows Care, (Overkill, I know, but I'm a bit nervous about infections!!) I'm a subscriber to Windows Secrets, and Langa List before that, and don't download Windows Updates till they give them the All Clear. Sorry for the length of this, Regards Pat Macguire |

Then I suspect no updates whatsoever installed after the clean install until Windows Update Agent 7.2.6001.784 was installed on 04 September (which occurred automatically and independent of your AU settings; cf. http://blogs.technet.com/mu/archive/...s-update.aspx). Had you been aware of that updates weren't being installed, Resolution Method 1 and/or Method 2 in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144 would have addressed the issue. I encourage you to: 1. Check in at Windows Update now and install any remaining critical security updates offered; 2. If you have MS Office installed and Microsoft Update is NOT your default update source, either check-in at Office Update or change your default from Windows Update to Microsoft Update (which will offer you updates for Office and many Windows Live applications); 3. Be prepared for a new round of updates to be offered on 09 Sept-08 (cf. http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../ms08-sep.mspx) and on every successive Patch Tuesday in the future; and 4. Reconsider your policy of installing critical security updates only after Windows Secrets mail list says it's OK to do so: • The updates are rigorously tested prior to release and 99% of users will not encounter any issues after installing them • 99.999% of security updates are fully uninstallable; • Your machine(s) remains vulnerable to wide-spread security exploits (especially after the updates have been released) if the machine is in an unpatched state; and • MS offers no-charge support for every security update released. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-IE, Mail, Security, Windows Desktop Experience - since 2002 AumHa VSOP & Admin http://aumha.net DTS-L http://dts-l.net/ |
