Have you gone there to find out?

Does the website you sent me at first, tell him how to send for the CD?
Is there a charge?

Yep, after I wrote. Should have done that first, I know. Shame on me!
Found out it's free, but $5 shipping.

He does have internet service (dial up). Does it take quite a while?

It can, yes. Once the setup file (IE6Setup.exe, 481KB) has been
downloaded, the rest of the download might well be over 80MB.

The computer he has was given to him by a friend, and he doesn't even
have
an anti-virus program (yet).

IMHO getting an anti-virus application installed and configured properly
takes precedence over both installing IE6 SP1 and checking in at Windows
Update. In the meantime, if he sends for the CD, it'll be in his mailbox
already!

If
so, I'll tell him to set it to run maybe overnight, or at least when he
doesn't need to use the computer for a while!

The computer he has was given to him by a friend, and he doesn't even
have
an anti-virus program (yet). He has another (computer savvy) friend who
is
going to install an anti-virus program for him, but right now the friend
has
some personal (family) problems and can't do it right away. But at
least he
won't have to disable anything to upgrade OE/IE !

...I'm thinking to not confuse him I'll just send him the first link
you sent.

Good idea. If he doesn't send for and use the CD, he'll have to be
online
to upgrade He'll first download a small Setup file When he then
runs
the Setup, it will need to access the internet to download additional
files of his choosing (e.g., Outlook Express) Then the install will
begin.

Don't forget:

I would STRONGLY recommend that the anti-virus application be
disabled
prior to installing IE6 SP1 in Win98.

After getting IE6 SP1 installed, go immediately to Windows Update
to
install additional critical updates the machine will now need.

So basically since my friend is using Win98 on a Win98 machine, that
particular link (for a different operating system) won't affect him,
is
that
right? I'm thinking to not confuse him I'll just send him the first
link
you sent. I know what an operating system is, I just didn't know
what
a
"different" one was, or what it referred to.

What Tom said.

Windows is an Operating System. Use the steps on that page if you or
your
friend wants to download IE6 SP1 using another computer (e.g., WinXP)
to
be installed on the Win98 machine.

Order IE6 SP1 on CD (US & CA only)
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/...d/default.mspx

[Not that long ago, Win9x users would be offered IE6 SP1 at Windows
Update. No longer. In fact, Win9x users must have IE6 SP1 installed
before they can use Windows Update now. Go figure.]

Thanks, Robear. Before I send this info on to him, what is meant
by a
"different operating system" ? I don't want to confuse him. S

Your friend must download/install IE6 SP1 independent of Windows
Update:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/...1/default.mspx

Downloading IE for a Different Operating System
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=174680

I would STRONGLY recommend that the anti-virus application be
disabled
prior to installing IE6 SP1 in Win98.

I have a new friend who acquired an older computer (Win 98)
recently
and
it
still has OE v.5 on it. I can't remember how to tell him the way
to
upgrade
to v.6. As I recall, the upgrade would be both for IE and OE.
Thanks.
