Default in a word table how do I align across columns (word 2003)

I am working with tables but don't seem to be able to find how to align words
across columns

If you want to merge cells, select them and then click Table | Merge Cells.

On the other hand, if you want to justify text, press Ctrl+J (works the same as in the main body of the document).
