red x -pictures don't print

I wouldn't scan directly into publisher.

I'd scan to a .tif file at 1200 if you want, keep in separate folder, then
use IrFanview or any image editor to adjust images prior to using in any
publication (keep copy of original scan). This way you have a hi res
lossless original to work with and make into anything you want to later.
