Default cannot reinstall Excel 2003

I was having a problem where I couldn't open Word or Excel attachments
that came in emails. PowerPoint attachments opened fine. I figured
something got corrupted, so I uninstalled Excel first, then tried to
re-install it from the original CD and it failed. The installation
starts OK but very quickly I get a window saying that there was an
error, that the installation failed, and it prompts me if I want to send
an error message to Microsoft. So it doesn’t give me a specific error
message or code.

While I researched the problem, I ran the virus scan (came out clean)
and then the defrag utility. After doing this, all of a sudden the Word
attachments opened up fine. So, the original problem is solved but I
can't get Excel re-installed.

The SW loaded on this PC is:
Windows XP Home Edition SP3
MS Office Professional 2003

Default cannot reinstall Excel 2003

TXGuy,
I'm not 100% sure but from the log file I posted (Setup(0003).txt) , it
looks like a Setup (0003)_Task(0001).txt was also created. This is
actually happening on a friend's PC, so I'll have to get it from them
and post it here.
