Default Can't reinstall Office 2003 pro

My o/s is Win XP Home edition.

I have had MS Office 2003 Professional Version installed for 2 - 3 years.

I recently wanted to use the Office tools (to add a digital signature) but
they appeared not to be installed.

In Add/Remove Programmes, I tried to use the "Change" feature, but got the
following error message:-

"This Patch Package could not be opened. Verify that the Patch Package
exists and that you can access it or contact the application vendor to
verify that this is a valid Windows Installation Patch Package."

It seems that he problem might be related to the Windows Installer and a
version update of it, since MS Office was first installed.

If I try to uninstall MS Office, I get the same message as above. If I try
to reinstall over what's there again the same message.

How can I fix the Installer problem if indeed that is at the root of the
problem?
