In addition you can also do any of the following so that Word does not close
when you close the last open document:

Press CTRL+F4
CTRL+W
Using Key Tips: press ALT+F+C

You can easily add the Close command button to the Quick Access Toolbar
Click the Office Button to display the Office menu
You can simply right click Close and click Add to Quick Access Toolbar
-or-
Click Word Options to display the Word Options dialog box and click
Customize to display the customization options
In the Choose commands from drop-down list box, select Office Menu
Select Close and click Add
Click OK

If you want to add a button to the Quick Access Toolbar to close all open
documents without closing Word:
Access the customization options as above
Select the Close/Close All command button and proceed as above

To use the Close/Close All command, press SHIFT and click it to close all
open documents
