Default font in TOC

I posted this query earlier but it hasn't shown up so I'm trying again. I'm
editing a report, so I inherited a generated TOC. The problem is that some
of the entries are in small caps and everything I've tried tro do to change
them has failed. Then, I went to insert TOC, modified the font by clicking
off the small caps button and tried again. Still, the same problem. Any
suggestions would be much appreciated.
