automatic change of styles
I have been editing a very long document in Word 2000
Sometimes, I have a style called "Req_Id". When I look at it again, there are lots of new styles called "Req_Id Char", "Req_Id Char Char", "Req_Id Char Char Char", etc. How do they get there and how do I prevent them from being created? Also, I have tried to check the number of instances in each styles, but the count number presented in the "Style Panel" is clearly wrong. Sometimes it says there are no instances for a given style, but my highlighted text is clearly in that style. Then I try to change "Req_Id Char Char Char", select all text with that style, change the style back to "Req_Id", and when I remove style "Req_Id Char Char Char", the text that had been previously changed to "Req_Id" goes back to the "Normal" style. It is all confusing and all messed up. Has anyone experienced similar problems ? Arnaldo Yokomizo |

Hi Arnaldo,
There's a bit about this in the "Tips" section of my website. But you shouldn't be seeing these in Word 2000, unless the document is coming from Word 2002 or 2003? Generally, they're generated in that version when the user selects some text (without a paragraph mark) then applies a paragraph style to it. Cindy:
I looked at your website, but I couldn't find the tip relating to this. Are you saying that anytime you select a paragraph or a portion of a paragraph without selecting the paragraph mark you will get these "char" styles? What about placing the cursor at the beginning of the paragraph and selecting the style? This is driving us batty! Hi Paula,
I looked at your website, but I couldn't find the tip relating to this. Click the link to the "Tips" page, it's the first entry in that section. Are you saying that anytime you select a paragraph or a portion of a paragraph without selecting the paragraph mark you will get these "char" styles? What about placing the cursor at the beginning of the paragraph and selecting the style? Yes to the first; no problem for the second. As long as there's no text selected, or at least one paragraph mark is selected, you're OK.
