Default Can't update STYLE??

Say I've manually reformatted a Heading 1 style by changing the font and
font size, alignment, color and so forth.

Now I decide I want this manually applied formatting of Heading 1 to be
applied to ALL Heading 1 styles. IOW, incorporate my manual modifications
into the actual style. How can I do this?

I seem to remember in older versions of Word there was an option to "update
style" but I dont' see that in this 2003 ver.

Hi Tim,

Automatically update a paragraph style
If the Styles and Formatting task pane (task pane: A window within an
Office application that provides commonly used commands. Its location and
small size allow you to use these commands while still working on your
files.) is not open, click Styles and Formatting on the Formatting toolbar
(toolbar: A bar with buttons and options that you use to carry out
commands. To display a toolbar, click Customize on the Tools menu, and then
click the Toolbars tab.).
Right-click the style you want to have Microsoft Word automatically update.
Click Modify.
Select the Automatically update check box.
From now on, Word will automatically redefine the style you selected
whenever you apply manual formatting to any paragraph with this style.

Notes

This option is off by default, and it is recommended for experienced style
users only.

This option is only available for paragraph styles (paragraph style: A
combination of character- and paragraph-formatting characteristics that are
named and stored as a set. You can select a paragraph and use the style to
apply all of the formatting characteristics to the paragraph at one time.),
and it is not recommended for the Normal style (Normal style: The default
paragraph style used in documents based on the Normal template
(Normal.dot).).

Please let me know has this helped You...
Thank you...

There are several approaches to this.

1. If you want to restore the functionality you had in previous versions (as
I did, being used to it), you can check the box for "Prompt to update style"
on the Edit tab of Tools | Options. Then when you reselect the style in the
Styles list, you'll be asked if you want to update the style to match the
current formatting.

2. If you have the Styles and Formatting task pane displayed, click the
arrow beside the style name and choose "Update to match selection."

3. There are two commands available through Tools | Customize that you can
add to a toolbar. One is Redefine Style; the other is FormatStyleByExample.
I'm not sure which does what you want (possibly both?).

Use Suzanne's methods instead, much safer. Automatically update styles to
match formatting should only be used in template development, if then, IMO.
(OK to use it then, but don't forget to turn it off!)
