Office 2000 upgrade -- can't find qualifying product
Milly,
No, that article didn't come up with my search. I was given that information by the polite Indian lady who answered my call to the 800 number. When I posted here, I was hoping to find fellow users who had had this problem, and had gotten the top secret information before the life cycle of Office had expired. Since they gave the information for free until June 2004, somebody here must have been given the information and be willing to pass it on. Are you willing to try to help me or are you just trying to defend Microsoft against li'l ol' me? My contention is that this informaiton exists, and that between 2000 and 2004 a great many users received that information. I would like to post a new question looking for users who know how to do what I need to do. If you'd let me post that question without loading it down with criticisms of my intelligence, I would really appreciate it. If not, let me know here, and I'll just go back to using Open Office and not give Microsoft Office a backward glance. Joanne "Milly Staples [MVP - Outlook]" wrote: Since you searched the Microsoft Knowledge Base, I am sure you found this article as well: http://support.microsoft.com/lifecyc...+2000&x=8&y=17 -- Milly Staples [MVP - Outlook] Post all replies to the group to keep the discussion intact. Office 2000 upgrade -- can't find qualifying product

Just ignore any response that doesn't answer the question. I'll just go back to using Open Office and not give Microsoft Office a backward glance. That's a viable alternative. OO has had some problems in retaining formatting when opening *some* MS Office documents but I've been told that's getting better in later releases which I've not tried. As you should have learned from reading between the lines of various responses in this thread, MS Office does require upgrading every few years as support is phased out for earlier versions, so does OO but the upgrades are free. If you have no problems with the few small limitations of OO and the one big limitation (no database) then you should stay with it. -- David R. Norton MVP |

Office 2000 upgrade -- can't find qualifying product
David,
Thanks. I guess I'm hoping that whatever Microsoft wants to charge me $35 for is a piece of information (a key code, a patch to download or some other way to type in something that will make the two programs recognize each other) rather than a CD or something else they'd have to send me. Regarding Open Office, all I wanted to do was find a program that would open files I had saved in Microsoft Office. I don't need a database or a lot of bells and whistles. Microsoft Works has worked fine for me, except when I want to open an older file, or a Word document file sent to me by someone else. I'm not exactly a "power user" when it comes to Office, which is one reason I'm hesitant to pay to find out if there's a fix. "David R. I'd be afraid your $35 might buy you the same information you've already received here. I did a search of Google groups and found nothing that hasn't already been discussed here. The only possible solution might be to acquire an older version of MS Works from some source such as ebay and use it as the software to upgrade to Office 2000. You wouldn't need to install it, just insert the CD when Office 2000 asks for it but since OO is working for you, there's no reason to do that. I did find one copy of Works 4.5 on ebay for $9.99 with $4.30 postage, that's cheaper than paying the support charge... ;-) -- David R. Norton MVP |

Thanks, David. If OO doesn't work for me, I'll just find an old copy of Works.

Ok are you sure that there is not a CD or floppy extraction
programme built into the original re installation disks that you have. Some OEM versions I have ended up with allowed for the included software to be extracted to my media I probably lost a few years as well :-) Geoff "Joanne" wrote in message ... Politely bowing out to let others provide the assistance Joanne requires.
