Ready to Install Office Home & Student 2007 Edition

I currently have MS Office Professional 2000 on my computer with Vista OS.
Do I have to Uninstall this program before installing Office Home & Student
2007 Edition? or can I just put the disk in and Instal knowing that it will
install over the current Word, Excel, & PowerPoint that is currently on my
computer?

Any help in this would be appreciated. I want the smoothest transition to
2007 that I can get. I do Medical Transcription from home and can't afford
to have down time on my MS Word program. Will install sometime in the next
day or two after I finish a day's work so I can orient myself with the new
program.

You said you do medical transcription. Presumably you do medical
transcription with Word. Presumably you get paid for doing medical
transcription with Word, which makes your intended use a
revenue-generating business activity.

Okay - see that on the pkg. now. I did a side-by-side comparison to get the
Office program I needed. Didn't see this little tidbit of info. Just like
when I got my new computer and opted for Vista Home Premium and didn't seen
anything that said there was no fax software with it (even though I ordered a
fax modem with the computer). MS is good at leaving out the info. you need.

SO - I can use this on my other computers in the house but not on the one I
type reports on. The other computers have a previous version of OFFICE on
them - do I have to uninstall those to use Office 2007 Home/Student Edition?
AND what version would I need for "work"?

May decide to sell/return this version. This is a lot of money, & I want
the right one. So confusing. . . .

It's not Microsoft's fault that your computer has a fax modem but no fax
software. That is the fault of either the computer manufacturer or the modem
manufacturer.

As for the edition that you need, the HSE and academic versions are the only
ones with the commercial restriction on them if I recall correctly.

Its not entirely down to MS, your supplier has some responsibility.
If you purchased a fax modem it will usually have been supplied fax
software.

If you only need Word then I believe a version of Works comes with this, or
you could use Open Office which is free

Thanks for all of the info. Will probably return this or sell it to a
friend and continue using my MS Office 2000. I'm not the only person also
thinking that Vist Home Premium came with software for fax capabilities. XP
Home Edition had it, and it should have stayed with Vista Home Premium - but
another topic for another forum.

(MS Office Home & Student 2007).

Office 2007 Home and Student Edition is the only Office 2007 edition
that has the non-commercial use limitation. All other Office 2007
editions (Standard, Small Business, Professional, or Ultimate) would be
suitable for "work", and all Office 2007 editions include Word and Excel.

Windows Fax and Scan is available in the Business, Ultimate, and
Enterprise editions of Windows Vista. See

You can have more than one version of most Office applications on your
computer, except that you can only have one version of Outlook.

If you only want the 2007 versions of Word, Excel, etc., then in my
experience the 2007 installation will be smoother if you uninstall the
old Office version before you install the new Office version. Back up
Word's normal.dot template and any custom templates you created,
autocorrect list, and custom dictionary before you uninstall. See

information. The Office 2007 setup program offers an Upgrade
installation option, which is supposed to automatically remove the old
Office version for you, but in my experience it doesn't always work like
it is supposed to.

If you want to keep the old versions of Word, Excel, etc., alongside the
2007 versions, then choose a Custom installation of 2007, and choose to
keep the old versions in the Installation Options tab. Back up Word's
normal.dot template and any custom templates you created, autocorrect
list, and custom dictionary before you install the 2007 version. See
