Default Printing 2 identical numbered pages on one sheet

I have typeset a book with finished size to be 8.5" x 5/5" portrait 214
numbered pages, MS Word 2003 - XP OS. The Printer (Office Depot) asking for
two copies of identical numbered pages on same 8.5" X 11" sheet. I can set
up for printing two consecutively numbered pages on the same sheet, but she
cannot set up her laser copier to then handle the two-sided printing. When I
attempt to reconfigure the manuscript to print for book-fold, it messes up
the margins and increases the page count considerably. Is there a way I can
trick Word 2003 into printing 2 of the identically numbered 8.5 x 5.5 pages
on the same 8.5 x 11 sheet without messing up the pagination? I would need
to print all 214 pages in that manner. I am not a programer but up until I
arrived at the printer, I thought sure I cut a fat hog with typesetting my
manuscript and without wasting any paper.

It will not be easy, but, assuming that you have selected "2 pages per
sheet" in Page Setup, you can tell Word to print pages 1,1,2,2,3,3, etc.
You'll have to do it in batches since there's a limit to the number of page
numbers you can put in the "Pages" box at once.

What *doesn't* work (though it would be really helpful if it did), is to ask
for 2 copies of each page and tell Word not to collate. Logically, this
ought to work, but unfortunately it doesn't.

Dear Suzanne,
You are a sweetheart! Your solution is laborious yes, but no matter, it
will get the job done. Thank you so much for sharing your experience and
knowledge with me. Maybe Microsoft will program a simpler solution into
their next "Word".

Yes, it really would make a lot of sense to make the "copies" option work
logically. I think I'll submit this as a "wish" for a future version.

Default Printing 2 identical numbered pages on one sheet

Suzanne,
I've run into a couple of glitches. My book has front matter that is not
pagenated, followed by front matter that is pagenated in small case roman
numerals. The print window will not accept entry of pages expressed in small
case roman numerals.

Thereafter, starts the first chapter and is pagenated -1-, -2-, -3- etc. to
the end of the book. Printing the first 7 or 8 pages works OK as you
suggested. When I enter in the print window, 13,13 and select 2 pages per
sheet, it will print numbered page 13 (which is actually page 35 of the
document) in duplicate on same sheet. Except, the copy on the right hand
side of the sheet contains one line that is 2 or 3 lines on top of each
other. The left side copy is perfect. The overstrike does not happen when
I print 1 page per sheet. When I enter 11,11 it will print consecutive
pages on each sheet and continue with additional pages in sequence until I
cancell print. Any ideas?

Yes, Word doesn't speak Latin. You need to enter the page number as an
arabic numeral, followed by the section number. So, assuming your front
matter paginated with roman numerals is section 2, then you would need to
print p1s1,p1s1,p2s1,p2s1, etc. This really is a bummer, I know, but
unfortunately, that's the only way I know of to get those pages.

As for the later pages, I'm afraid you'll probably have to include section
numbers with them as well, though I don't know whether that will settle the
print issue or not. Do you in fact have these set up using "2 pages per
sheet" in Page Setup, or are you using the Zoom "2 pages per sheet" setting
in the Print dialog. That could well make a drastic difference.

That does work. Also, if there is only one page in section 9, and that page
is "x" the print dialogue box requires that be input: p10s9,p10s9 I
checked to see if the 2 pages on one sheet was selected in page set up, and
it wasn't. It was showing "mirror", but when I changed it to "2 pages on 1
sheet" it threw the document off the cliff, so I "undid" it, and will
continue to select 2 pages on one sheet in the print dialogue box.. I will
work around the overstrike line by printing it singly, twice, then copy them
side by side on a clean sheet. My readers will never know the difference.
Anyway, thanks a bunch for your help.

If there's only one page in a section, then you should be able to use just
the section number: s9, s9. If you are putting two pages on a sheet by
reducing, then of course changing to "2 pages per sheet" in Page Setup would
not work at all. I had thought that, since you had planned this page size
from the outset, you would have used that setting to achieve that paper
size.
