Default How do I single space lines in Word

I have been to Formatting in the Toolbar area. I am not able to figure out
how to have single spaces between lines in my Word document.

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

In Format | Paragraph, make sure that the line spacing is set to Single and
that there is no Space Before/After. If both are correct and you're still
seeing larger-than-single spacing, make sure that the vertical alignment
(Layout tab of Page Setup) is set to Top and not Justified.

I'm usiing Word 2000 with Windows XP Pro.
I'd been writing a double spaced manuscript. To go to the next paragraph, I
click "enter" once. It had been working fine, but all of a sudden, when I do
that, it gives me four spaces instead of two between the paragraphs.

I've gone to paragraph formatting, and can't seem to fix the problem (which
popped up out of nowhere). If I leave the spacing at "double space" it keeps
giving me four lines between graphs. Any help is appreciated, because my
editor is going to kill me.
Thanks.

It's possible that you have some Space Before/After in your paragraphs (you
could have added 12 pts Space Before by pressing Ctrl+0). If that's not the
case, go to the Layout tab of Page Setup and make sure the vertical
alignment is set to Top and not Justified.

Thanks for the suggestions, but they didn't solve the problem. There's no
value other than "0" set in the before/after, and in page setup, the layout
is set to "top." What puzzles me is that the problem just began happening,
with no changes to my setup having been made. Opened up a new document
(chapter), and suddenly I'm getting four spaces between paragraphs.

I'm afraid I'm out of ideas; perhaps others can help?

Suzanne's suggestions usually cure this kind of trouble. All I can
think of is the following: Are you using a different font or a larger
font size? These are factors that might increase line height.

You may also want to follow the instructions in the "How can I fix a
corrupt document?" section of the article at
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/CorruptDoc.htm to get rid of
possible document corruption. The procedure described in the
article can also be applied to a template, if the problem occurs with
newly created documents. If the problematic template in question is
the blank document template (normal.dot) there is a simpler fix: just
rename it and have Word create a fresh copy for you, as described in
the "Creating a new Normal.dot from scratch" section of the article at
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/...ocNotBlank.htm.
