Default delete headers and footers

How do I delete all traces of headers and/or footers? Nothing seems to
respond. They won't go away and I do not want to dump my document and start
again. Also, is there any way to reveal codes like formatting, spaces,
indents etc? Thanks, T

Just double-click in the first Header area, selectall and delete it: then
click the Next button and repeat until all the Headers are empty. Then
repeat same for the Footers.

The only caveat is that if you used the infernal Insert Page Numbers tool to
insert a Page Number, it inserts it inside a hidden Frame. You need to turn
on the View Borders to see it (Tools, Options, View tab - near the bottom)
and make sure it is deleted.

You may also need to revert the paragraph to a small size and adjust the
File, Page Setup Headers and Footers margins to zero.

Unfortunately, in Word 2002 and 2003, you cannot entirely eliminate a
header/footer. If it has ever contained content, an empty paragraph will
remain. The only way to regain the header/footer space (for labels, for
example) is to set the header/footer margin to 0". This is why we discourage
people from ever adding header or footer text to Normal.dot.

For the answer to your second question, see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/NonPrintChars.htm and
