Default TOC/List of Figures

I am working with a document created by someone else
(usually a challenge) Figures will be placed on the page
following their first mention.

The originator has created a link, from where "Figure X"
is mentioned in the document to a list of figures end of
the document.

The TOC/List of figures, List the figures and the page
number of the list at the back of the document. How can I
get it to display the page where they are mentioned
instead?

Hi SharonJo

I think we'll need some more information here.

1. What version of Word are you using?

2. How were the figure numbers created?

3. How was the list at the back of the document created?

4. Do you really want the Table of Figures to give the page number where the
figure was *mentioned*?

Sorry.
1. Word 2003
2. The Figures are not part of the document--they will be
inserted when the report is reproduced(following the page
that they are first mentioned).
3. The list of figures-which will not be part of the
printed report-is simply a list I am not certain how they
make it shou up on the Table of Figures. Must be a
caption?
4. Yes, see 2.

Default TOC/List of Figures

Hi SharonJo

Let me see if I've understood this question correctly.

The text in the document says things like "here is Figure 1, which is a
picture of a house" and "here is Figure 2, which is a graph". Neither the
picture nor the graph actually exists in the document. So there is no
caption to the picture or the graph. The only thing that exists is the
ordinary text in which someone has typed "1" and typed "2". Those numbers
were not generated automatically in any way by Word. Is that correct?

If that's so, then I don't know any way to create a Table of Figures that
will show page numbers automatically.

The usual way to do these things is to do three steps:
1. Create the caption for the picture or graph using Insert Reference
Caption and in the label box choosing Figure.
2. Create a reference in the text, where you want to say "see Figure 1", by
using Insert Reference Cross Reference and referring to the figure.
3. Create the Table of Figures using Insert Reference Index and Tables
Table of Figures tab.

Hope this helps.

The "link", from where Figure X is mentioned in the document to the list
of figures at the end of the document, is probably a bookmark. Go to
the List of Figures and toggle Field Code Display to "on" with Alt+F9.
Do you see something like:

{ REF Name \h } { PAGE }

where "Name" is something like "Figure X" or some other pseudonym for
the figure referenced in the text?

If so, replace the { PAGE } field with { PAGEREF Name \h }, press Alt+F9
again to toggle Field Code Display to "off", and you will get the page
number where the figure is cited. HTH.
