i added a new pst file using mail setup via control panel. how do i get
outlook to default to this file without opening outlook (which gets
locked up
when opened)?

"M" is incorrect. Start the Mail applet in Control Panel. Click the
E-mail Accounts button, select "View or change existing e-mail accounts"
and click Next. At the lower left will be a drop-down labeled "Deliver
new e-mail to the following location". Change that drop-down to point
to your new PST. Click Finish. Click the Data Files button, select the
broken PST and click Remove. Click Close, then Close again. Outlook
should now be able to start with your new data file as the delivery
location. You can then repair the old PST as explained in the link I
posted previously, which should allow you to recover most of its contents.

I misread her post. I had thought she hadn't created a new .pst file yet.

Are you sure your PST file wasn't oversized? If not ,you can try
Advanced Outlook Repair to solve the problem, by either converting it
into Outlook 2003 format ( http://www.datanumen.com/aor/problem...rt-2gb-pst.htm
), or splitting it into smaller pieces ( http://www.datanumen.com/aor/problems/split-2gb-pst.htm
)

http://www.datanumen.com/aor/ contains the detailed information about
Advanced Outlook Repair.

And you can also download a free demo version at http://www.datanumen.com/aor/aor.exe

Outlook has no built-in way to reduce a PST or OST file that has gone over
the limit. However, Microsoft provides a tool, PST2GB:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

, which you can download to restore the file to operability. Note, however,
that the utility truncates the data from between 25 and 50mb and the
truncated data is not recoverable. The remaining data under 2GB should be
restored. See OL: Oversized PST and OST Crop
Tool:http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=296088

You may also review pst repair software to successfully repair .pst file
which is larger than 2gb. http://www.repair-outlook-pst.com/

for more information.

where is that file normally located?

It's a hidden file. Use search to find it and make sure that it searches
for hidden files. Search for outlook.pst.

OK. What size is your .pst file? Hopefully, not over 2GB.

Version of Outlook? How big is your .pst file?
