Hi moe,

Are the other messages revealed when the plus sign is clicked to expand the
list?

While in the Inbox
Under the OE View menu | Current View is Group by Conversation selected?

No. If you are speaking of _the_ Preview Pane that I am familiar with,
it is just one message per preview.

It is the top view in the OE where usually the messages are listed.
Heading is : FROM SUBJECT RECEIVED

That would be the "List Pane". Is there a "Plus" icon next to the
message? Something like:

[+] Joe Blow Some subject, or other 9/29/2006 22:45

(It feels like we're playing 20 Questions here.)

Windows version? Is the machine fully patched at Windows Update?

Is this sudden, new behavior or an ongoing problem?

Do you have only one mail account running in OE? Is it a POP3 account, an
MSN/Hotmail account or an IMAP (e.g., AOL) account?

Just to re-cap - the Inbox shows 4 but only 1 visible to read?
Can you get into your accounts on your ISP's site and go to your mail box
and see if they are being held in there.
Just a thought - seems everyone else has suggested the most obvious.
Or click on the Send/Receive - might kick it into life.
Or send yourself a couple of emails - see if they appear - I believe one can
do that.
Perhaps your ISP may have an answer.

Hi moe103,

If everything else fails you could try creating a new (empty) Inbox.

First move any messages you want to save to a new folder for temporary
storage. I'm not sure how many messages are now in the Inbox, but it should
not be used for long term storage or be allowed to become too full.

Find the message store folder
Close Outlook Express
Delete the Inbox.dbx file

Open the Store Folder

Instead of using search the store folder can be opened directly. Each
identity has its own store folder.

a.. In Outlook Express click on Tools, Options, Maintenance tab...Store
Folder.
b.. Place the cursor at the left of the text of the path to the folder.
c.. Drag the cursor to the right until the text scrolls to the end.
d.. Right-click on the text and choose Copy.
e.. In the Start, Run box right-click Paste. Click OK to open the store
folder.
f.. Close Outlook Express before working with the message store files.

Using Keyboard Shortcuts for Transfer of the Folder Path
Courtesy of: Jim Pickering, MVP-Outlook Express

An even easier method when opening that page is to use the Tab to
highlight the folder location, then Ctrl+C and close OE, then use Start/Run
and Ctrl+V. Same caveat about hidden files applies but can be easily
modified in Explorer by using Tools/Folder Options.

It sounds like MSOE has been configured to show a threaded view of the
messages in the list pane.

Since the messages don't show when the "[+]" is clicked, and MSOE is not
actually configured for the list view, I would guess that something is
corrupt.

At this point I would suggest attempting Kuay's solution.

Assuming all four (4) messages are available at www.hotmail.com, your
current Identity may be damaged, especially if its the default Main
Identity. Try one or more of your accounts in a new Named Identity (File
Identities Add new identity). Assuming all is well, (1) compact all
folders in the old identity, (2) import messages from the old identity into
the new one, and then (3) delete the old one (File Identities Manage
Identities).

To avoid such corruption in futu

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Disable Background Compacting [N/A in SP2] and frequently perform a manual
compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm

- WinXP SP2 only: Do not attempt to close OE via Task Manager or shutdown
your machine if Automatic Compacting is taking place.

- WinXP SP2 only: If your machine is fully up-to-date at Windows Update,
installing the following patch (KB918766) will help to avoid such data loss
in the futu
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...2-98af2256ccc3

This patch will be included in the next Cumulative Update for Outlook
Express/WinXP SP2.

- Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause
corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection.
