Default DDE connection

I'm new at this. I created a form letter and I want to do
a mail merge to use info from an excel file that was sent
to me. When I get to step 2 in the wizard, I get

"Word could not re-establish a DDE connection to Excel to
complete the current task"

Using Office 2000 Premium. Not sure what version the
spreadsheets were created as, I saved them as Excel 97-2000

Hi Jane,

a mail merge to use info from an excel file that was sent
to me. When I get to step 2 in the wizard, I get

DDE-connection problems are difficult to trouble-shoot, and
sometimes the problem is system-specific and you can't get it
to work. A search of
the Knowledge Base on "re-establish DDE connection" will
turn up hits for most versions of Word. These might
help you most
