Default Suddenly downloading thousands of old newsgroup messages!

I know this has been discussed before, but since it had never occurred here,
I ignored the talk. sigh

I watch this group daily, post infrequently, read most postings. I use my OE
6.00.2900.2180 (sp2) as my newsreader as well as for email. I delete posting
messages daily and compact the file through the Properties/Local File boxes.

Tonight, when I clicked on this newsgroup, it downloaded over 7500 messages!
It is usually rare for me to get more than 300, even though I do not have
the "get xxx headers" box clicked. When I really looked at the messages,
most of them dated back months ago! After I realised it, I cleaned it all
up. Next time I checked the newsgroup I downloaded only 6 messages, so this
was apparently a glitch. So, this begs the question: What happened? And can
I prevent it from happening again?

Truly only an annoyance. But.....

Thanks in advance,
Pamela

The message store in OE is flaky. It was probably some corruption in the
dbx file associated with that NG that resulted in the problem.

See points 2 and 3 here to help stabilize OE (www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx),
but the random glitches are hard to control.

Thanks Steve. I know enough after following this newsgroup for a couple of
years to follow the tips. Too bad we can't account for the occasional
glitches too. LOL I will go backup immediately.
