Default I can't highlight

For some reason I can no longer go over a word (highlight) to change it or
delete it, I have to start at the end of the word and backspace. How could I
fix this? Thank you.

What version of Office are you using? You can't highlight with the
mouse OR the arrow keys? Can you point at the word and double-click to
select it? Does this problem happen in all programs?
