Default Opening attachmetns in OE 6

When I receive an Outlook Express 6 e-mail from a known source, with files
such as *.avi or Excel file attached, I would like to be able to open the
file by either double-clicking, or right clicking on it and selecting
"open". When I do this, a window opens with the filename in it, and clearly
identifies the associated program to run the file.

But, many such instances, which show the associated program to open the
file, do not respond properly when I confirm "open". An error window comes
up stating that the file type in question does not have an associated
program to run it. But the proper program was shown in the prior window, and
going into Windows XP Pro does show the proper association also.

But, when I save the file in question to a folder, and then double click on
it, it opens with its associated program.

Most extensions do open properly when I double click on them in the
attachment field on Outlook Express. But many of them do not.

Is there some option/setting that I have missed seeing, to correct this
situation?

I did go into ToolsOptionsSecurity, and made sure that the virus
protection box for "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened...etc."
was unchecked. But even with it checked, I can still save attachments. And
unchecked, I still get the same error message . The latest situation was for
an AVI file, and the associated program is the VLC player

Is there some option/setting that I have missed seeing, to correct this
situation?

Save the attachment to your HDD. Right click on it and Open With | Choose
Program. Find and choose a program that works and then check the box: Always
use this program to open this kind of file. This should enable you to open
these attachments in the future. In the case of the AVI file, you want to
choose Windows Media Player etc.

Default Opening attachmetns in OE 6

Hi Bruce,

Thanks for your reply. I had done the usual approach that you suggested, but
I called for VLC player, which would not work. Windows would apparently not
accept VLC, but when I called for WMP the error window did not appear, and
the AVI file played, as it should.. Strangely, when I did select Windows
Media player, Windows did accept that, and it opened fine on OE6.

As I noted previously, double clicking on an AVI file in my file manager did
play the AVI file via VLC, but now it plays in WMP. I guess that's a quirk
in OE6. Any explanation here?

But, it appears that I got another benefit from the problem. I'm running a
pretty high end machine (it was when I built it in 2006). Lately there is a
huge delay when shutting down, and the delay is occurring when in the "Log
off" period.

I scoured in Google re the AVI problem, and I found a message on a tech
forum that related to AVI problem, tying it to a corruption of the user
files in XP. I didn't see how that could be the problem, but the solution
involved reinstalling the user info in OE. And since I was apparently having
a possible corruption user problem (I'm the only user & administrator), I
decided to follow that up also. It involved a bunch of Registry deletions,
and some registration activity on the command line.

I'm pretty good at Registry editing, so I proceded along that path. In
essence, all the users were removed, and OE was uninstalled and reinstalled.
Of course, I had to reconfigure OE from scratch, as it was a raw reinstall.

Well, apparently that resolved the slow and "strange" shutdown problem. But
it had no effect on the AVI problem with VLC. Your fix did that OK

It is unusual to have a complex fix work on a different probem, from what it
was being tried for. But, all's well that ends well. I hope the slooooow
"logging off" continues to stay fixed. :-)

Thanks again -

Ron Hirsch

The Windows File Associations can have multiple actions associated with
a file type. These could include OPEN, EDIT, DISPLAY, SHOW, etc.

One of those is designated as the default action. That's what gets used
with you double click a file in Windows Explorer.

When you open an attachment within OE it is looking specifically for an
action called OPEN. If it doesn't exist, you get the file association
error message.

Hi Michael,

Thanks for your reply.

That's quite a comprehensive document that you created. I've saved it as a
PDF, and it should make very interesting reading.

Thanks again
