Default mail merge corrupts my data

I am using a large excel spreadsheet with several data fields, with which I am using mail merge to tabulate forms in word. All of the cells in Excel are formatted as text. When doing the merge, it generally works, except fields with a long string of numbers gets corrupted by extraneous numbers and garbage characters. Why is this happening and what can I do to prevent it. This is on Word/Excell 2003. The company will not be upgrading for quite some time.
