Default Can you protect word doc when you have mail merg data from excel?

I can't seem to find a way to protect a word document that has data merging
into the document from excel. I'm trying to set it up so that a user cannot
edit any data in the word doc but allow the data from excel to merg into the
designated fields.

The word doc is a template letter.

This is in Windows XP
