HELP! Word 2003 changes from italics to bold and spaced out.

Hi, I've been looking around the board and have not seen anything on
this issue, so I decided post a new thread.

This is a fresh install of Office XP, whenever I highlight a small
section of text (maybe one or two lines) and click "italics" the
highlighted selection instead of becoming italics, goes to a weird
looking format. it changes to bold and heavily spaced characters. Is
there any way to fix this?

I'm desperate, I have a ton of reviews and features to write and Word
2003 scares me.

Now I'm realizing that there is a truetype issue. In messenger, I can
not see messages typed by some contacts, A lot of my truetype fonts in
Word are invisible in the font list and there are webpages that I have
a problem seeing.

has anyone else encountered this?
