Default Even Footer text box dissapears when "Different Even/Odd H/F" sele

Windows 2000 Pro
Word 2002 SP3

I have a 22 page document with a simple page number as the footer. However,
when I select "Different Even/Odd Header/Footers", the text box in which to
type/edit the Even page footer dissapears. The page numbers continue to be
correct for odd pages and I can still select them and edit them under "view
header/footer". The headers of even and odd pages are not affected, and
either can be selected and edited.

I'm stumped as to why just the even page footer would dissapear in all
views, and not even be "clickable" in "view header/footer" mode. The entire
dashed-line box with the words "even footer" is gone. Where the even page
footer should be is simply blank. And like I said, the header is just fine.

Any ideas, before I retype the entire 22 pages? (even cutting a pasting the
document into a "fresh" blank one creates the same issue - starting the
document from scratch and manually retyping does NOT have the same problem
and works just fine).

Thanks in advance.

When you cut and paste into a new document are you being careful to omit the
final paragraph mark? Also, if your document contains any section breaks,
you'll need to delete them before copying and pasting (or paste one section
at a time--without the break).
