i'm not a troll, this is my first time ever in newsgroup's or chat room's i
think i might have come across that way sorry. ihave a question are server's
for e-mail the same as for newsgroup?i'm trying to download a couple of
newgroup's(ireally don't know how i downloaded this one) when i get to that
part about typing in the server i use in say's it's complete than i say's
it's not connected. thanks.

Contact the company that provides your internet access and ask them if
they offer newsgroups. If they do, ask them how to setup newsgroups on
your computer.

No. Actually, email consists of different kinds of servers. SMTP for
message submission, and mail transfer, POP3 for message retrieval
(download email from the server), and IMAP for message reading (email
stays on the server). News is NNTP, and consists of a network of
servers, run by different providers, which feed article back and forth.

SMTP: Simple Mail Transfer Protocol
POP3: Post Office Protocol
IMAP: Internet Message Access Protocol
NNTP: Network News Transfer Protocol

They are scripted commands, and depend on which type of server you
connect to. Your User Agent, MS Outlook Express, actually "knows" them
all, and will use the correct command based on the server type you have
configured.

Somewhere, somebody must have told you how to access the server. Setting
up a news server is similar to setting up a mail server, but you have to
know the name of the server. I use several, some of which a

msnews.microsoft.com
news.sf.sbcglobal.net
news.grc.com

The first is the Microsoft groups on their server. The second is my ISP
(AT&T Yahoo! HSI), which carries thousands of groups from servers all
over the world, including many of the groups on 'msnews.microsoft.com'.
The last is a privately run server associated with this site:

http://www.grc.com/

It is fairly small, with a low number of groups, but many of the posters
know what they are talking about. Could be very helpful for new users.
The web site should have some instructions on setting up for the server.

Your NNTP posting host says you are a Comcast customer. I believe
Comcast no longer runs their own NNTP servers, but contracts with
Giganews for NNTP service. You can find more details on the Comcast web
site.

You can have several NNTP servers configured in MSOE, just as I have in
40tude Dialog my User Agent. Each server will have its own set of
folders in the MSOE folder pane, just below the email folders in the
folder pane.

Which made me think of your email address. Spammers harvest from web
sites, more than from Usenet posts; but these Microsoft groups seem to
attract viral harvesters. You are actually showing a valid Comcast email
address in your posts. Use your MS Outlook Express message properties to
look at the full headers of this post.

In your news accounts configuration in MSOE you can change your email
address. This will be independent of your email accounts, so the change
is only local. I own the domain in my posting email address, and created
the one I use here. In other groups I am inclined to use an email
address with the .invalid Top Level Domain (TLD). It would look
something like this: . It is a proper domain,
reserved for live Internet testing, but commonly used in this fashion.
Like my "msnews", (which doesn't point to a email server), the
".invalid" TLD does not point to any email servers.

If you don't mind getting the occasional off group email, you can put an
email address in the "Reply-To:" field, as I do, but it should be a
disposable email address. Because I do own my own domain I can create
disposable aliases. Before setting up my own mail server, I was using
SneakEmail accounts, which are disposable, as well:

But you don't really _need_ a working email address for new group
posting. If you never expect the audience to reply to you privately,
just using an RFC 2822 compliant email address is sufficient. Having a
user name ("Don't_spam"), and the email symbol ("@"), and a domain name
("me.invalid") makes the email address RFC 2822 compliant, and broken at
the same time.
