OK.

I'm running Windows XP SP2. Ever since I upgraded to SP2, I've a problem
with my OE newsreader.

Very often, (OK, most of the time), the newsgroup will say "NNN messages not
downloaded", and show that number in the blue parentheses next to the
newsgroup name, but no matter how many times I click on the Headers button,
no more messages will download.

I've tried resetting the NG, unsubscribing and re-subscribing, marking all
as read, even creating a new identity but the problem persists. If I
right-click and select "catch up" the number clears until the next time I
click "Headers" then the number reappears, but no additional headers will
download.

I have no filters or views applied except "Hide Read Messages" but even
turning that off makes no difference.

I have more than one USENET provider, and it happens will all of them so
that would tend to rule out an ISP problem.

And one last thing: It only seems to be a problem with Binary groups.
Regular text groups are not affected.

Any thoughts?

No. But even if I was, the "Ignore" filter is on the client side. The
header does not get ignored until after it is downloaded.

That's normal. OE is just proving that it can do arithmetic on your computer.

If you want to see how it did its calculation turn on Troubleshooting logging
for News (via Maintenance tab). Recreate your symptom. Turn off logging
and look for a file having the same name as the name that you are using
for that news account and with an extension of .log. It will be in the same
directory that your OE Message Store is in. The data that you are interested
in is the news server's 211 responses to OE's group requests.

The most common instance of this symptom is that the server gives an illogical
"estimate" (e.g. more messages than are possible within the range implied
by the response) and OE dumbly calculates the difference as the number
of messages left to download.

Check it, then ignore it or wait for the server to give a logical estimate.
Neither side is technically wrong, just stupid.

Or CAN'T do arithmetic, as the case my be.

Thanks, but one last question: Why didn't I have this problem before the SP2
upgrade?

The problem has been there for years. It's not new to SP2. Seems more
common on some news servers than others. I see it most on Microsoft's
news server. But it tends to come and go.

Maybe you've just been lucky.

If you Right click on a problem newsgroup and select Catchup, that may
clear up the problem for a while.

Also make sure the option to download xxx headers at a time under Tools |
Options | Read is unchecked.

It is. But what else make it strange is, it only affects binary groups.
