When PP files opened, text converts to typographic symbols
I am a new PP 2007 user with Windows XP Home. I have successfully created
several presentations on my desktop, which work perfectly, but when I transfer them to my laptop with my flash drive, the text presents itself as typographic symbols. This doesn't happen when I open them directly from the flash drive when plugged into my desktop. Presumably I need to change a PP or Windows XP setting on my laptop? Please help. Thanks. -- DavidP |

Is the font you used to create the presentation also on your laptop?

What font did you use to create the presentation. It could be that it's
missing on the laptop. Another possible issue is that your laptop doesn't have local printer drivers, only ones on the network. PPT 2007 doesn't like that. So try this: How to install a local printer driver http://www.pptfaq.com/FAQ00605.htm If the printer driver is what fixes the problem, I'd love to get some system information from you to help troubleshoot this for future users. -- Echo [MS PPT MVP] http://www.echosvoice.com What's new in PPT 2007? http://www.echosvoice.com/2007.htm Fixing PowerPoint Annoyances http://tinyurl.com/36grcd PowerPoint 2007 Complete Makeover Kit http://tinyurl.com/32a7nx "DavidP" wrote in message ... David, which fonts did you use on your desktop? Do you have the same fonts on your laptop? If not, you can embed the fonts when saving the presentation. In the "Save as"-dialog click on "Tools / Save Options" and activate "Embend fonts in the file". -- Mit vielen Grüßen Pia Bork MVP PowerPoint http://www.ppt-faq.de |

Thank you everyone for your advice. Yes, it was the missing font.
The presentations were for the Tate Gallery in London using their special font - TateRegular. The font was not in my fonts folders (to the naked eye) but the Tate had sent me a template which used the font. It worked for the presentations on my desktop but not, for reasons I still don't undertand, on my laptop. Because of your answers, Sandy and Echo (sorry Pia, didn't see yours till afterwards) I spoke to the Tate and they emailed me the font. I installed it on both computers and the laptop now shows the text properly. Before all that, I had checked Echo's suggestion re. the printer driver on the laptop. It was functioning perfectly. It was the default and I printed out a test page. But the font still emerged as typographic symbols. Thank you all again for your help. My headache has disappeared. Much relief. -- DavidP "Pia Bork" wrote: DavidP wrote: I am a new PP 2007 user with Windows XP Home. Glad you found the answer. To clear up one last bit, perhaps:

It worked for the presentations on my desktop but not, for reasons I still don't undertand, on my laptop. You may've had TateRegular installed on the desktop but not on the laptop, but I gather not. But you probably have a different mix of fonts on the two computers. When a needed font is missing, PowerPoint/Windows will substitute what they deem the next best thing, given the available set of fonts on the computer. It's possible that a fairly reasonable substitute was available on the desktop, so while the presentation didn't appear in the correct font, it at least looked reasonable, where on the laptop, an adequate substitute wasn't available and you got ... what you got. Thanks, Steve. I had noticed that the font on my desktop presentations
looked a bit different after I had installed the Tate's font. Probably for the reason you give. Very grateful. -- DavidP "Steve Rindsberg" wrote: Glad you found the answer.
