Default Simple Formula

=IF(A1="Brent",[SlowDownChart.xlsx]Sheet1!$B$3,"")
Dave, this is the exact formula I am using. When entered into a cell, with
both files open, the cell returns #REF!

Open both the receiving file and the sending file in the same instance of excel.

Select the cell in the sending file
Edit|copy (or ctrl-c)

Select the cell in the receiving file
Edit|paste special|paste link

You'll end up with a formula that has the correct syntax.

Once you get that portion working, you'll be able to add the =if() portion.

Or you'll be able to describe what problem happens next.

Even if I open two new Excel books, I cannot grab the sum of a cell on the
other book, it looks like the formula does not follow when I click on the
other book.

That means you don't have a file by that name--excel is asking you to locate
that file so that it can use it, too.

When I copy the formula, and press Enter, it brings up the Look in box and
shows;
Update Values: SlowDownChart.xlsx
When I cancel that, the cell shows #REF!

ppps. Make sure you have calculation turned to automatic.

Does that mean that the cell looks empty?

I bet that if you retype Brent in A3, you'll see that it retrieves the value in
that external file.

ps. Check to see what's in B3 of Sheet1 of that slowdownchart.xlsx workbook.

pps. Do you have slowdownchart.xlsx open and are you using xl2007?

Canon wrote:

=IF(A3="Brent",[SlowDownChart.xlsx]Sheet1!$B$3,"")
This is the formula I used, (the cell numbers are correct), but it won't
return a value.

Hi,
check for any spaces in cell A1 before or after Brent, if there is any

Mike, for some reason this formula is not working for me.

"Mike H" wrote:

yes you can

"Canon" wrote:

Thanks Mike, can I just grab the information from the other workbook?
ie =sum(other workbook cell)

Hi,

Try this with the file extension changed as required

=IF(A1="Brent",[Book2.xlsx]Sheet1!$A$1,"")

Default Simple Formula

What's the formula you get when you use the Paste Link technique?

That doesn't look like anything I've ever seen in excel.

I don't have a guess what this is.
