can't open files in Office 2002

Hi;

After years with no problems and using the same XP pro OS, suddenly I can't
open existing files or create new files from within any office 2002
program, from the file/open drop down, the open icon or ctrl+O. When I try
using these methods, the program locks up until I hit the esc. key. I can
open existing files by double clicking on it from a file manager but not
from within the programs. Any ideas ? Did the open switch wear out ?
