Problems installing Office 97

I just bought a new Gateway laptop with Windows XP Home Edition and
Microsoft Works installed.

I removed MS Works and tried to install Office 97.

I get this error message:

"El programa de instalaci=F3n detect=F3 que ya se instal=F3 Microsoft
Office en otros equipos."

(Translated: The installation program detected that Microsoft Office
has already been installed on other computers.)

If I reformat the hard disk I can install Office 97, but there must be
a less painful way.

You might try the windows installer cleanup utility, a free download from
MS - I dont have url - it may be that works installer has not been removed.
Or perhaps if it was an OEM version of Office its tied to the origonal sys -
though I did'nt think did this on this version.
