Default Adjusting column widths

In Word 97 when changing a column width, there used to be
2 ways to do it: either you clicked and dragged the 'table
column' marker on the ruler (which adjusted both the width
of your column and the width of the table) or you rested
your pointed on the column boundary until you saw the
resize marker and then clicked and dragged (which adjusted
the width of one column by adjusting the adjacent column,
keeping the width of the table the same). In 2003, using
the resize marker adjusts the width of your table as well,
which is very frustrating. Does anyone know how this can
be avoided or why this is happening? Thanks!

There are various ways to drag (with Shift, with Ctrl, etc.). See
