I have been talking with the guys from the IT department
and have assured me that they do not touch, freeze or change these type of documents. -----Original Message----- Does that mean that they have frozen the default settings or that they don't mess with your normal.dot? Yes this is a company PC on a network, and the "IT nazis" told me that they do not touch the default settings on these files. -----Original Message----- Is this a company PC on a network? It could be that the IT nazis cause a default normal.dot template to overwrite your own. In which case apart from railing at the laziness of the IT staff which is preventing Word from being used correctly, you will have to put up with it. On reflection, there is a potential workaround, but we'll address that if necessary later. If it is a solo machine, then normal.dot is not being updated. The original could be corrupt, so rename it and let's start again with a new one. Reinstalling Word will have no effect on this problem whatsoever. Is your normal.dot template stored in a folder which is marked "read-only?"

I have gone through with the guys from IT and have had a
look at all the files and folders where the normal.dot lives and none of them are read-only. Yes, for CE, here's Office MVP Beth Melton's boilerplate:
If Norton AV was installed at one time then the DLL for the Office Plug-in could still be registered. Search for : officeav.dll If you find it then go to Start/Run and run the following command: regsvr32 /u "path\officeav.dll" Here is a KB article that provides a few additional details. It does not include information on Norton CE but it will contain additional details on the unregister command if you need them: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=329820 -- Suzanne S.
