OE6 and AVG (Free Edition)
Could I get 100% confirmation from this newsgroup
that OE6 does not support AVG Email Scanner and that currently MS Outlook is the only Email client supported. Thanks a bunch. (OPsys=XPHome) --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). Version: 6.0.737 / Virus Database: 491 - Release Date: 11/08/2004 |

However, I ran a test and the "Outgoing mail is certified..." message does not appear. It was there when I had mail scan on and I was running OE5, prior to an upgrade. -- Doug Main "It's never too late to have a happy childhood." |

It doesn't make a difference because that signature such as...

I don't normally scan email locally; all email comes to me through Mercury Mail, and I have a virus scan policy set up in Mercury Mail which works very well. -- Norman ~Win dain a lotica, En vai tu ri, Si lo ta ~Fin dein a loluca, En dragu a sei lain ~Vi fa-ru les shutai am, En riga-lint |

AVG email scanning does indeed work in OE. Despite its name, the OE5
Plug-in must be enabled for scanning to take place. Whether you need it or not or whether OE likes it is another topic. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (IE/OE), AH-VSOP Are You Ready for WinXP SP2? http://support.microsoft.com/default...r=windowsxpsp2 What You Should Know About Spyware http://www.microsoft.com/athome/secu...ssoftware.mspx AumHa Forums http://forum.aumha.org Aquarius wrote: Could I get 100% confirmation from this newsgroup that OE6 does not support AVG Email Scanner and that currently MS Outlook is the only Email client supported. "Aquarius" wrote in message ... Could I get 100% confirmation from this newsgroup that OE6 does not support AVG Email Scanner and that currently MS Outlook is the only Email client supported. Thanks a bunch. (OPsys=XPHome) AVG uses what they call a plug-in to do this and it often appears to work fine, however on several occasions using 98SE, ME, W2000 and XP I have seen OE refuse to start, exhibiting symptoms that look very much like OE problems but which are cured instantly the moment the plug-in is disabled. The moral of the story seems to be that if you choose to use the plug-in and subsequently have OE problems make the plug-in the first place you look. This is probably true of all AV programs but certainly can be a problem with AVG and can lead you to do all sorts of unnecessary things before you think of turning it off. By the way I use and recommend AVG all the time so that's not a criticism of AVG, only a tribute to human memory (or lack of it). FWIW I think the problem seems worsened when automatic compaction (in the background) is turned on. I think (note I only think - don't know) that it's possible for AVG to detect a virus during compaction and upset the compaction routine so that the .dbx file concerned is either locked or somehow unreadable to OE with the plug-in running. Simply stopping it fixes the problem. Charlie |

AVG 6 does NNTP (news server), AVG 7 does not.

AVG 6 does NNTP (news server), AVG 7 does not. Okay; but the post only mentioned MAPI. Neither does IMAP (The question is can it scan MAPI like in Outlook 97/98/2000/XP/2003 ?) since OE and OL don't support downloading (saving locally) IMAP, you need POP3 to scan locally. IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) IMAP is a way to access a server and, if you like, keep your e-mail messages stored on the server. Using IMAP has its advantages: a.. You can create and move folders or mailboxes, delete messages, and even perform a search for certain parts of a message- all on the server. c.. Your e-mail travels with you and is always available since it's not stored locally on any particular client (and I know you know what an e-mail client is). Note You do have to be connected to the server continually while you're receiving or sending your e-mail, so that's one thing to consider. Okay; but the post only mentioned MAPI. FWIW, I know how IMAP works. Really. I do; I run an IMAP server here. Incidentally, the Mercury Mail Anti Virus Policy does process the email before it puts it in the message store for the IMAP clients to access it. MAPI (Messaging Application Programming Interface) MAPI is used with Outlook in conjunction with a Microsoft Exchange Server mail server. MAPI is a lot like IMAP (in fact, it's an anagram of it), but it provides a wider array of features when you use it from within Outlook. Unfortunately, I don't have a Microsoft Exchange Server, and I don't have Microsoft Outlook. There is no way that I could test that implementation of MAPI. The closest I come to that is the simple MAPI that lets Sam Spade push mail output through Pegasus Mail. In that mode, Pegasus Mail runs the email through the Mercury Mail server that I run, and the Mercury Mail server Anti Virus Policy always kicks in when it processes messages from mail clients on my side of the interface; or when it processes messages, either to the SMTP server, or the from the POP3 servers. The 2 above (IMAP & MAPI) above are from http://office.microsoft.com/assistan...yID=Wwv5T2Bbz0 Well, I learned nothing new about IMAP. But, never having had a real implementation of MAPI, I did learn something about that. Now, all of that is well and good, but probably does nothing to answer the question; "...can it (AVG6) scan MAPI like in Outlook 97/98/2000/XP/2003"? I still don't know the answer, and I didn't get around to playing with the computer running AVG. I seem to recall that AVG6 only works with MSOE, but that is what I needed to do. However, I am up for a WAG. Assuming that the interaction between Outlook and Exchange is similar to that of Pegasus Mail and Mercury Mail, the answer would be, "No". I know that Pegasus Mail does not hand off email to Mercury Mail in a normal SMTP transaction; not in my LAN environment, anyway. Rather, Pegasus Mail places the email directly in the Mercury Mail SMTP queue for delivery. An email scanner, like AVG (which I am pretty sure does not work with Pegasus Mail, anyway), or Norton (which does) intercepts the SMTP transaction. But, if there is no SMTP transaction, as it the case with Pegasus Mail to Mercury Mail, and, probably Outlook and Exchange, there is nothing to Intercept. After all, if the mail goes from Outlook to Exchange through MAPI, there is no SMTP involved; or so I would think. I do recall that Norton would intercept the outbound SMTP transaction of the Mercury Mail SMTP client (either the "End-to-End Client", or the "Relaying Client" modules), and the "POP3 Distributing Client"; but it wasn't designed to catch email coming from remote MTAs to the "SMTP Server" module. AVG 6 just doesn't know how to handle none MSFT mail software, anyway (Well, maybe Eudora). But I wanted to have the SMTP in checked, so I learned how to have Mercury Mail scan for viruses, which it does on all modules, and turned off the Norton AV scan. -- Norman ~Win dain a lotica, En vai tu ri, Si lo ta ~Fin dein a loluca, En dragu a sei lain ~Vi fa-ru les shutai am, En riga-lint |
