Thanks Bear;
I've been manually compacting OE for years when I close the computer
each
night. It's the last thing I do actually.
I have created several archive folders on the bar and regularly
transfer
files out of the sent folder into this archive folder.
I use no automatic download features at all on my system, so hopefully
nothing is downloaded when OE is being manually compacted so I avoid
corruption this way (knock on wood at least :-)
This new update I guess wouldn't affect me using OE the way I do, but
it's
no big deal to have the baks put into the recycle bin when I compact. I
know
this procedure probably helps a lot of people so I can live with it :-)

Why we MVPs asked for it for many, many years:
http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/probl....htm#mailgone;
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/IE/...orruption.mspx

+26,000 instances where messages have gone missing during/after
compacting: http://snipurl.com/156d5

The behavior was first introduced earlier this year with the 918766
patch.
We've been telling everyone here that this patch would be included in
the
next Cumulative Update for OE: http://snipurl.com/156du

NB: With 923694 (MS06-076) installed, you do NOT need to install
918766,
nor would installing it succeed.

See Notes section of http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=918069 for
documentation of this behavior and how to recover your messages using
the
BAK files. (IMHO, this documentation and more should be spelled out
in
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=923694 but I'm not holding my
breath.)

My own area for the MVP, [flight simulator] is highly dependant on what
happens around then. Should prove to be an interesting month for all of us.

Thank you. It's an interesting experience.
As for controllers, I use CH Products after testing almost everything else
out here. They are stable, realistic, and will function right out of DirextX
with no additional software (unless you want it)

I think the problem everyone is stressing is that you don't want anything
downloading into a folder like the inbox as you are compacting. The way I
use OE might be preventing this anyway, as I am configured to check for
mail and everything else for that matter manually. In other words, I don't
use ANY automatic downloads on my system.
Just an individual preference I guess, but it seems to work for me.
I'm not all that savvy on OE, so I have a tendency to do what the folks in
the know suggest. I can't think of anything that clicking on the OE folder
does for me in my scenario, but I'll usually do things that Frank and the
folks suggest anyway just in case they know something I might have missed
:-))

Default OE6.0 compact question

:-))

I have always had the tree open because I often select individual folder.

| Thanks Bruce, I'll just click on OE before compacting.

| You don't actually have to close the tree, but it is suggested to
click
on
| Outlook Express so no active folder is open.

| I've always left the tree there because I didn't know that it
mattered
I
| guess. Is it better to click it closed before compacting? Safer????

| Very. The other thing I do when I compact is to click on Outlook
Express
| at the top of the folder tree, get rid of the folder tree and, like
you,
| go off line. You can put icons on the tool bar for both going off
line
