Default outline-numbered headings for appendices

I formatted a report using outline-numbered styles (headings 1 through
5). I had to insert several separate appendix documents at the end of
this report. Each appendix contained three levels of outline numbered
headings (A., 1., a.), to which I applied heading 7, 8 and 9 styles. In
order to get the headings in each appendix to start with “A.”, I applied
a heading 6 style to the first line of each appendix and “hid” it. (I
always have hidden text displayed so I don't see a problem with this
being accidentally deleted.) Other than that, is this a feasible way to
do get my desired result? Does anyone see any problems that may arise as
a result of getting my headings to restart this way?

If the appendix is Appendix A (as seems to be the case), why not apply the A
numbering to the Appendix title?
