Default duplicate values for primary key

all of the sudden my table's autonumber field is using numbers that have
already been defined. therefore, I am getting an error message to change the
data in field, remove the index, redefine the index to permit duplicate
entries. this table has relationships with other tables - any of the above it
will not let me do.

why would the autonumber start reusing numbers (there are only 195 records
in this table currently)? I saw something about restarting the numbering by
appending the table to a new temp table, but got lost in the instructions, I
guess, since it didn't work.
