Hi Stuart,

Sometimes the error you receive does happen when Outlook Express (msimn.exe)
installation is damaged. Cos there's lot of files shared between the 2
programs esp for send/recv.
You wil have to completely remove and re-install Outlook Express to fix this
problem, for which you would require the Windows XP Discs.

Try doing this process -

Control Panel Add/Remove Programs Add/Remove Windows Components Disable
Outlook Express and then restart the computer.
Once back on, try enabling Outlook Express from the same menu.
If this doesn't work-out, try installing updates on Windows/Office esp try
installing SP2 for Windows XP.

Check if these steps helps, cos otherwise you will have to call MS to
re-install OE.

Hi Mittu

I think you are on to something. Outlook Express does NOT work on the
computer concerned. That's why I was trying to get Outlook to work.

When I click on the Outlook Express icon nothing happens. When I go to it
in My Computer and click on it - nothing happens. I tried copying the file
(Is it msimn..exe ?) from this computer. Still no reaction. I have problems
with OE over the years so I thought when Outlook opened and gave me Inbox,
Outbox etc. I was on the right track.

So the situation is that OE doesn't work at all, Outlook works but will
neither Send nor Receive. On the other hand the Internet connection over the
Wireless LAN is fine. I can surf without problems.

Hi Mittu

Something seems to have gone wrong with my reply last night. All that got
posted was my signature !

I tried your suggestions. In Control Panel removed Outlook Express, rebooted
then enabled again. Did not work.

I tried with the XP Installation Disc - actually upgrade from Win98, which
was previously installed. Reinstalled Outlook Express, rebooted. Still no
change.

I have automatic notification of updates installed and I think everything is
up to date. Have confirmed that SP2 is installed on XP.

I think I mentioned at the beginning of the thread that this computer has
dual boot, XP and Win98. I have OE installed in both partitions. In the
Win98 partition OE works inasmuch as it appears on the screen with Inbox,
Outbox etc.. Problem is that it can't get on the internet, can't get on to
my Wireless Lan, so test messages produce an error - "Can't find Server". I
gave up in frustration at this popint last night, but now understand the
reason.

The computer has a Wireless LAN Card. I only installed the software that
came with it in the XP Partition because that is the one I use all the time
for e-mail etc.. I think if I installed it in the Win98 partition also, I
could probably access the LAN there too and maybe I could send e-mails with
OE there. Will try.

Still does not explain why I cannot get either OE or Outlook to work under XP:

Hi Stuart,

Well regarding OE and Outlook in Win XP, there's file corruption. I suggest
you call MS for a manual un-installation of OE as the files have to be
removed manually and corrupted registry keys have to be removed.
And they will help you to re-install OE through SP2 files on the computer.
Cos that would be a sure shot process to fix the issue completely for both
the apps.

Hi Mittu

Well thanks for all your time and patience. Will try MS. They did help me
once before with a similar problem.

Default Can't set up e-mail accounts

Dear Stuart,

Recently I also had a problem similar to you, and I was unable to activate
my accounts settings, but after a lot R&D finally I got the success.
You just take the backup of your all Data on any external Hard Drive from
the all Drives in use(C/D/E) whatever you are using. Just Reboot your PC by a
XP SP2 bootable CD and format the entire PC and then delete all partitions of
the Hard Drive, Create new Partitions again and reinstall Windows XP, and
then MS Office.
This problem is being due to a Virus Threat, so make sure as you reinstall
XP Install and Update the antivirus first, I have loaded McAfee, and also
Scan your Data with the AntiVirus.
Hope you'll find the resolution of your problem with the help of above action.
Thanks & Regards!

am trying to set up Outlook 2003 with three e-mail accounts which I have on
another computer. I enter the details and get " you have set up e-mail
account successfully" each time but if I go back and press Test Settings, it
reports - Find Internet Connection - Completed, but at Find Server for
Outgoing Mail it shows "Cancelled" for each address. The Pop3 mail server
address is correct.

What can be wrong ?
