Can "Insert File Attachment" default be changed?

OK, I registered because this thread comes up after a lot of searching
for the terms "insert attachment" "sort order", and a lot of
unsuccessful searching for "file open dialog box" "sort order", "wrong
sort order" XP, etc.


The fix:

Right click My Computer
Click "Explore"
Click C: Drive
Click View
Click List
In right hand window, right click on an empty whitespace area
Click "Arrange Icons By"
Click "Name"

Make sure the list is now in alphabetical order. If it is reversed, do
it again.

Once the list is in alphabetical order, press and hold the shift key,
and click on the "X" close button in the upper right hand corner of the
windows explorer window.

Then you can set your view back to "Details", if you like.

This was driving me nuts, trying to find the solution.

The key for me was the message above, your file open dialog box sort
order is set by the order that is saved when "List" is chosen for the
view. Since I never use that, I don't know how it got changed on me,
but it affects the file open dialog boxes for all kinds of
applications, like Outlook Express and many others. Changing the file
list sort order under Details view doesn't fix it. A registry fix that
is posted somewhere doesn't fix it. The Microsoft knowlege base article
talks of windows 98, and is no help. You have to use windows explorer
to set the view to list, then sort the list, then do the ctrl - quit
thing to save the settings.

There, hopefully I've seeded the message with enough language to allow
google to find it the next time it messes up on me and I don't remember
how to fix it.

Yeah, that's how you fix the open file dialog box sort order. Unless
it's spelled dialogue. I don't know, but that should fix the sort
order in file open or Insert File Attachment or Save File As dialog
boxes.
