Default Faxes seem to go fine, but aren't received

I'm using Outlook 2000, and Symantec Fax Starter Edition that came
with it.

I have always been able to send faxes fine, until recently. Nothing
changed, to my knowledge, but now when I send a fax, it seems to go
just fine, but is never received.

I tried sending a test fax to myself just now, and I noticed that it
says "Sending," then abruptly the window goes away. I do not get a
"Failed" message or anything.

Any thoughts?

TIA,

Mike

Explain exactly how you are sending the fax and what happens, including all
modem activity.

Default Faxes seem to go fine, but aren't received

I usually send faxes by printing to Symantec. The test that I did last
night was by clicking on "New Fax Message" in Outlook, then manually
typing in fax@myfaxnumber

When I click on send, it asks me to confirm the number. When I click
on OK, it dials in, and you hear the machine respond. At this point it
says "Offering." After a few seconds, the noise stops, and it says
"Sending." This goes on for about 30 seconds before the "Sending"
window disappears.

That is all. It doesn't try again, and there is no "failed fax"
message like I usually get when the fax doesn't go through. On my end,
it looks like the fax was successful, but it isn't received.

I have tried re-installing the modem, with both the newest drivers and
with the drivers that it came with. Neither had any effect.

TIA,

Mike

All sounds like normal procedure for WinFax SE. You never get confirmations
or error messages and never know whether the fax is actually received.
Does it fail to every number you try or only some? You obviously can't fax
yourself.

By "error message," I mean that when a fax has failed before I get an
email back that says "Transmission failed." I never keep the copy, so
I don't know the exact verbiage, but it's blue and white.

It follows the same procedure with every number I try. I apologize for
being vague initially, but when I said that I can't fax myself, I mean
that I'm using a JFax number that has nothing to do with my own
telephone line. This fax number definitely works, because I receive
faxes all the time. Also, I've sent 8 faxes to customers, and none of
them were received.

Thanks,

Mike

Well since WinFax SE was abandoned 5 years ago, barely ever worked, and was
never supported, there is no way to troubleshoot this. I can't think of a
single reason anyone would even still be using WinFax SE. Why aren't you
using the fax program on your operating system?

Hi,

In my case, if some device or other modem is hooked up to the same line,
attempt
sending fax is apt to be failed.
Are you sure not having any hickey hooked up to the telephone line ?

The only thing that was on the phone line was a downstairs phone, but
I unhooked it from the wall and still have the same results.

An interesting development, though. After I tried sending a test fax
to my JFax number, about 4 days later I finally got a "Fax Failed"
message. To my knowledge, it never tried to dial out after the first
time.

However, US Robotics gave me a hyperterminal number to call and check
my S/N ratio. It came out a bit low at 36, so I'm guessing that the
problem is from the phone line, after all.

Thanks again,

Mike

Hi, Mike,

I have always been able to send faxes fine,

You said in your first message, so the telephone line might become
noisier than before I guess.

my S/N ratio. It came out a bit low at 36, so I'm guessing that the

Replacing the line protecter for phone line which is normally placed
outside on the wall may improve the situation. Othewise the noise
source is in your house.
